From m.cuddy.keane at utoronto.ca Sun Apr 5 18:27:27 2009 From: m.cuddy.keane at utoronto.ca (Melba Cuddy-Keane) Date: Sun Apr 5 18:27:28 2009 Subject: [Msa-members] MSA sessions at MLA 2009 Message-ID: <00f401c9b63d$b436f290$6401a8c0@Melba3> MSA is delighted to announce the following two MSA-sponsored sessions at ML= A 2009 (Philadelphia, Dec. 27-30): 1. Panel: Modernism=92s Popularity Presider: Rebecca L. Walkowitz, Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick [likely on Dec. 30; abstracts available on the MSA website by Nov. 15] "Popular, Pigeonholed, and Pissed: Vachel Lindsay and the Institutionalizat= ion of Modern Poetry" Mike Chasar, Univ. of Iowa "Popularization through Pedagogy: Ezra Pound's Pedagogy of Networks" Ellen C. Carillo, Univ. of Connecticut, Storrs "Popular and Modernist: Kipling and Joyce Reconsidered" Amanda Sigler, Univ. of Virginia "The Modernist Photobook: Narrating the Popular between Literature and Phot= ography" Patrizia Carollo McBride, Cornell Univ. 2. Roundtable: =93Unboxing Modernism: Beyond the Divides=94 = Chair: Melba Cuddy-Keane, Univ. of Toronto Participants: = Ann L. Ardis, Univ. of Delaware, Newark = Michael Leja, Univ. of Pennsylvania Anita Patterson, Boston Univ. Steven G. Yao, Hamilton College Our roundtable concerns current trends in modernist studies that transgress= definitional categories often treated as mutually exclusive. To what exten= t is recent work crossing over the established divides between, for example= : high/pop; secular/sacred; public/private; experimental/traditional; aesth= etic/ethical; difficult/democratic; Nation/World; centre/margins; theory/hi= story; journalism and everyday practices/avant-garde art? Have we reached = the stage where we seek not merely to "add" non-canonical writers, or to sh= ift attention from well to lesser known, but actually to collapse those put= ative divisions and to analyse all writing as participating--albeit in diff= erent ways--in a mixed and mingled world? That's not to say there weren't = differences (unboxing is both to release modernism from limiting categories= and to release it into diversities and multiplicities), but perhaps "we" b= ecame so aware of the differences that we failed to engage the connects? While participants will discuss their own research and teaching, we will al= so feature (through PowerPoint) a range of other work being done across a v= ariety of divides: mixings, hybridities, translations, conversations--appro= aches that break down what Jeffrey Schnapp recently called the "silos." We= hope to mount an exciting session that will encourage optimism about the f= uture of modernist studies, astonish non-MSA attendees (perhaps) with the r= ange of work that is currently being done, and stimulate those in attendanc= e to continue to open up new questions, new areas in the future. = [further information, including an invitation for input, to be posted on th= e MSA website in June] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We are offering our members new payment options this year. Instead of having to pay conference and membership fees separately, you may now choose the "pay together" option, which allows you to pay for membership and conference fees at the same time. One must be a current member to attend to the conference, so we hope this option will help facilitate the payment process. You may register at: http://msa.press.jhu.edu/conferences/msa11/registration.html We are also pleased to announce that our new CFP page is a resounding success. There are over 30 modernist studies CFPs listed right now. Many of the CFP deadlines for MSA XI are near, so please visit our site if you are interested in giving a paper at this year's conference: http://msa.press.jhu.edu/cgi-bin/cfp_view.cgi In other news, you may now keep track of MSA news on Facebook. PANEL and ROUNDTABLE information is pasted = below. The full text of the call for panels, seminars, and roundtables, = as well as information about the site and rules of participation, can be = found online at or = by following the links on the MSA homepage. Questions can be directed to the local conference organizers = (msa.english@mcgill.ca) or to Rebecca Walkowitz, Chair of the Program = Committee (rebecca.walkowitz@rutgers.edu). We look forward to seeing you in Montreal! *CALL FOR PANEL PROPOSALS* Deadline: Monday, May 11, 2009 Topics are not limited to the theme "Languages of Modernism." Successful = proposals will introduce topics that promise to expand research and = debate on a topic, and will present a clear rationale for the papers' = collective goal. Please bear in mind these guidelines: * We encourage interdisciplinary panels and discourage panels on single = authors. * In order to encourage discussion, preference will be given to panels = with three participants, though panels of four will be considered. * Panels composed entirely of participants from a single department at a = single institution are not likely to be accepted. * Graduate students are welcome as panelists. However, panels composed = entirely of graduate students are less likely to be accepted than panels = that include presenters with degrees together with graduate students. Proposals for panels must be submitted via email and must include the = following information. Please assist us by sending this information in = exactly the order given here: * Use as a subject line: PANEL PROPOSAL / [LAST NAME OF PANEL ORGANIZER] = (e.g., PANEL PROPOSAL / GORMAN) * Session title * Session organizer's name, institutional affiliation, discipline, = position or title, mailing address, phone, fax, and e-mail address * Chair's name, institutional affiliation, discipline, position or = title, and contact information (if you do not identify a chair, we will = locate one for you) * Panelists' names, paper titles, institutional affiliations, = disciplines, positions or titles, and contact information * A maximum 500-word abstract of the panel as a whole * Brief (2-3 sentence) scholarly biography of each panelist Submit proposals by MONDAY, MAY 11, 2009 to: msa.english@mcgill.ca Panels will be selected by mid-June. *CALL FOR ROUNDTABLE PROPOSALS* Deadline: Monday, May 11, 2009 Unlike panels, which generally feature a sequence of 15-20 minute talks = followed by discussion, roundtables gather a group of participants = around a shared concern in order to generate discussion among the = roundtable participants and with the audience. To this end, instead of = delivering full-length papers, participants are asked to deliver short = position statements in response to questions distributed in advance by = the organizer, or they take turns responding to prompts from the = moderator. The bulk of the session should be devoted to discussion. No = paper titles are listed in the program, only the names of participants. *Other MSA roundtable policies:* * Roundtables may feature as many as 6 speakers. * We particularly welcome roundtables featuring participants from = multiple disciplines, and we discourage roundtables on single authors. * Panels composed entirely of participants from a single department at a = single institution are not likely to be accepted. * Graduate students are welcome as speakers. However, roundtables = composed entirely of graduate students are less likely to be accepted = than roundtables that include degreed presenters together with graduate = students. Proposals for panels must be submitted via email and must include the = following information. Please assist us by sending this information in = exactly the order given here: * Use as a subject line: ROUNDTABLE PROPOSAL / [LAST NAME OF ROUNDTABLE = ORGANIZER] (e.g., ROUNDTABLE PROPOSAL / GORMAN) * Session title * Session organizer's name, institutional affiliation, discipline, = position or title, mailing address, phone, fax, and e-mail address * Moderator's name, institutional affiliation, discipline, position or = title, and contact information (if you do not identify a moderator, we = will locate one for you) * Speakers' names, institutional affiliations, disciplines, positions or = titles, mailing addresses, phones, faxes, and e-mail addresses * A maximum 500-word rationale for the roundtable * Brief (2-3 sentence) scholarly biography of each speaker Send proposals by MONDAY, MAY 11, 2009 TO: msa.english@mcgill.ca Roundtables will be selected mid-June. -- = Rebecca L.
