Whereas the emergence of spatial phobias such as agoraphobia (Carl Otto Westphal, 1871) and claustrophobia (Benjamin Ball, 1879) coincided with growing urbanisation and the development of the modern metropolis, Sigmund Freud?s modern subject theory situated phobia at the heart of his psychoanalytical practice (?Little Hans?, Totem and Taboo, Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety). The fin de si?cle was rife with cultural and social fears about the present and the future, and the twentieth century-with its two global conflicts, its natural disasters and the threat of terrorism-has ushered in a period of postmodern panic. Fear and anxiety are omnipresent in the modern age. But when, how and why does fear become chronic, morbid or abnormal? And in what ways has fear been conceptualised by medical practitioners, cultural theorists and artists? This interdisciplinary conference looks at the different ways in which writers, artists, historians, art historians, cultural and human geographers, scientists and medical practitioners have constructed, represented and theorised phobia and chronic fear. We welcome proposals for papers on any aspect of phobias and anxiety disorders in the period from 1789 to the present. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome. Topics may include but are not limited to: ? spatial phobias ? biophobias ? social phobias ? phobia and the Gothic ? the fin de si?cle ? phobia, modernisation and modernity ? phobia and psychoanalysis ? phobia and cultural geography ? fear of science and technology ? phobia, the senses and physical sensations ? phobophobia Please send paper proposals of 300 words to Dr Vike Martina Plock and Dr Martin Willis at rclas@glam.ac.uk before 1 December 2008. Proposals for panels (comprising three speakers) are also welcome-please submit the title and a brief description of the panel as well as abstracts for the individual papers. ----------------------- Dr Vike Martina Plock Lecturer in English Literature Cardiff School of English, Communication and Philosophy Cardiff University Cardiff CF10 3EU Telephone: 02920 874244 Email: plockvm@cardiff.ac.uk From shyamal.bagchee at ualberta.ca Tue Jul 1 11:08:32 2008 From: shyamal.bagchee at ualberta.ca (Shyamal Bagchee) Date: Tue Jul 22 09:18:33 2008 Subject: [Msa-members] TS ELIOT: SELECTED POEMS??? L=F3pez=92s groundbreaking essay =93Early cinema and = Modernity in Latin America=94 (2000) laid out a comparative view of the = emergence of moving pictures in Latin America. She invited to = identify the traits of Western modernity=92s asynchronous and = peripheral manifestations. While mainly premised on a remote access = to Western technologies, communications, and lifestyles, moviegoing = in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico prompted new practices of national = self-representation. In addition to actualit=E9s of local interest, in = fact, the earliest forms of national films productions were = narratives of marked patriotism. Examples of these modern pageantries = included Nobleza gaucha (Argentina; 1915); A vida do Bar=E3o do Rio = Branco (Brazil; 1910), and Grito de Dolores (Mexico; 1907). By combining Western cinematic practices with patriotic narratives of = decolonization, Latin American film productions often relied on the = representation of vast and pristine natural sceneries and typical = social landscapes=97variously featuring urban =E9lites, European = immigrants, gauchos, indigenous populations, and former slaves. = Engaged in exhibiting the recurring tensions city/countryside and = indigenous/urban life, Latin America=92s cinematic modernity came to = acquire its own, original, polyphonic traits, which often took form = in narratives exalting non-urban or non-urbane, folkloric, and racial = diverse characters. Given the influence of European film manufacturers and first- = generation immigrant filmmakers, what role did influential = =93scientific=94 notions of racial difference play in Latin nations=92 = production of patriotic narratives? What other frameworks of = acceptable, or even valuable, racial difference were deployed in = these modern productions? Since traditional notions of cinematic = modernity have been mainly articulated in temporal terms (i.e. = positivist notions of progress, time travels, photography=92s embalming = of time), what can we learn from film productions aimed at = celebrating new geographic places, national entities, and diverse = societies? What happened when the modernity of Western cinematic = attractions became refracted through Latin American peripheries? Welcome contributions include, but are not limited to, case studies = related to early/silent films, production companies, film figures = (i.e. filmmakers, producers, actors/actresses) that attempts wider = critical reflections in light of current debates about early cinema, = modernity, and postcoloniality. If interested, please send a 250-word abstract via email (to = giorgiob@umich.edu) by August 8. Notification of acceptance to the = panel will be emailed by August 15. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We're looking for papers that illustrate H.D.'s role in shaping religious thinking. Topics might include, but are not limited to, H.D.'s interests in various religious practices ancient and modern, her involvement in spiritualists' discourses, her use of museum artifacts and ancient texts as evidence of broader religious thinking, her use of science within the religious discourse and religion within the scientific discourse, as well as articles that consider other religious/spiritualist associations--Quaker meditations, Moravianism, the RAF seances, popular culture, and the modernist occult. The Business Lunch offers everyone the opportunity to meet and chat with other members of the society, discuss future plans and developments in the organization, and enjoy a well-appointed lunch on site. The event has been generously subsidized by the Johns Hopkins University Press. Rising transportation and food costs, however, require that we charge members a modest $10 fee this year to help defray the cost of the lunch. (And this being the 10th Anniversary of the MSA conference, we plan a lunch that will make $10 seem like a nice deal.). If you have NOT YET REGISTERED for the conference and would like to attend the business lunch, please check the appropriate box on the Web form at: If you have ALREADY REGISTERED but would like to attend the lunch, please send a check or money order for $10 (in U.S. dollars) made out to Vanderbilt University to: Amanda Hagood/Derrick Spires RE: MSA X Department of English Vanderbilt University Box 1654, Station B Nashville, TN 37235-0001 NB: Those unable to write checks for U.S. currency should email the organizers at msax@vanderbilt.edu to arrange alternative methods of payment. We would also like to remind everyone at this time to be sure to pay your MSA society dues for the new 2008-09 membership year: July to June for new or rejoining members, and October to June for renewing members.
