Modernism and the Smart Magazines
This panel considers the various ways in which the Smart Magazines of New York City—especially, The Smart Set, Vanity Fair, The American Mercury, and The New Yorker—variously engaged modernism in all its various manifestations during the 1920s and 30s. Hence papers for the panel might analyze any of the following topics or others: how modernism was discussed, debated, and critiqued in the smarts; how the smarts excerpted or published particular works by modernist writers and artists; how the smarts helped to explicate, legitimize, and promote modernism and modernists artists and writers; how smart writers themselves created works of popular or middlebrow modernism.
