This panel invites paper proposals that deal with modernism, the Great War, and streets broadly conceived. MSA's 2020 theme of Streets intersects productively with a discussion of modernism and the Great War. The physical trenches in which soldiers lived can be thought of as disorienting, squalid streets, and indeed many British trenches were named after roads in London. This troglodyte urban space becomes a violent negative of the streets of the civilian city, and war anxieties on the home front alter the public conception of the spaces that modernism depicts.
We welcome proposals for any paper dealing with related issues for a panel at the MSA in Brooklyn (October 22-25, 2020). Please send abstracts of approximately 200 words, along with a brief biographical note, to Matthew Thompson at mrthompson at wustl.edu by March 6, 2020.
