Call for Papers for Pittsburgh MSA

New Approaches to the First World War: Bodies, Landscapes, Monuments

This panel will consider new approaches to both familiar and recently
uncovered literary and cultural representations of the First World War.
The panel’s focus will be on considerations of bodily integrity, injury
and physical sensation; the relation of bodies to landscapes; the
destruction of ecosystems; underground habitation; unburied corpses;
civilian bodies; and WWI hospitals, cemeteries and monuments. Various
approaches are welcome: disability studies, queer theory, eco-criticism,
trauma studies, history of medicine, visual theory, space studies, race
studies, archival projects, etc. I am particularly interested in
receiving interdisciplinary proposals that include attention to film,
photography, architecture, painting, sculpture or other media either on
their own or in conjunction with historical, literary texts and medical
texts. Also welcome are proposals that address the war beyond the
western front, issues of race and colonialism in the war context, and
materials by women writers and artists.

Please send a 250-word abstract and a one-paragraph bio to
sch1 at buffalo.edu by April 1st.
