Dear Colleagues,

Please join the Modernism Seminar of the Mahindra Humanities Center at
Harvard on Wednesday, November 20, at 6:00 p.m. to hear David Sherman speak
on the topic:

*“Varieties of Secular Experience in Hardy, Conrad, Woolf, and Beckett”*

The presentation will take place in Room 133 of the Barker Center.

*David Sherman* is an assistant professor in the English Department at
Brandeis University. His research focuses on modernism and the materiality
of ethical relations. His book *In a Strange Room: Modernism's Corpses and
Mortal Obligation *will be published by Oxford University Press in March.
He is currently writing a book, *Modernism and the Tangle of the Secular*,
about modernism's investigations into the grammar of secular concepts of
identity, knowledge, and time.

There is free parking near the HHC at the Broadway Garage, on Felton
between Broadway and Cambridge Street. Just tell the attendant that you're
participating in an event at the HHC. Normally the attendant is welcoming,
as long as it's after 5:00 p.m., even if we are erroneously not on the good
list.

We hope you'll be able to attend the session, which, as always, includes
discussion after the presentation.

The first spring session of the Modernism Seminar will be:

*Margaret Kelleher (University College Dublin)*, Title TBA, on *Thursday,
January 23* at 6 pm (Barker 133)

Details about the Center, including a calendar of events, are available at:
