Dear Colleagues,
Please join the Modernism Seminar of the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard on Thursday, 29 September, at 7:00 p.m. for a lecture offered by Claire Connolly entitled:
"Via Holyhead: Modernism and Celticism between Ireland and Wales."
The talk will take place in Room 133 of the Barker Center.
Claire Connolly is Professor of English at Cardiff University and author of the forthcoming A Cultural History of the Irish Novel, 1790-1829 (Cambridge University Press). She has published essays on Edmund Burke, Charles Robert Maturin, and Elizabeth Bowen and prepared scholarly editions of novels by Maria Edgeworth and Sydney Owenson (Lady Morgan). Other edited work includes Theorising Ireland and (with Joe Cleary) The Cambridge Companion to Modern Irish Culture. Professor Connolly is currently Peter O'Brien Visiting Scholar in the School of Canadian Irish Studies at Concordia University.
There is free parking near the HHC at the Broadway Garage, on Felton between Broadway and Cambridge Street. Just tell the attendant that you're participating in an event at the HHC. Normally the attendant is welcoming, as long as it's after 5:00 p.m., even if we are erroneously not on the good list.
We hope you'll be able to attend the session, which, as always, includes discussion after the presentation.
The remaining lectures for the fall will be:
Wednesday, 26 October, 6:00 p.m.: Liesl Olson (NEH Fellow, 2011-12; Director, Scholl Center for American History and Culture, The Newberry Library) on "Porkpackers and Poetry: Making Modernism in Chicago"
Wednesday, 16 November, 6:00 p.m.: Jeanne Follansbee (Director of Studies, Harvard History and Literature Program), title TBA
Details about the Center, including a calendar of events, are available at:
