[Msa-discuss] Follansbee at Modernism Seminar
PREYNOLD at holycross.edu
Thu Nov 10 10:26:20 EST 2011
Please join the Modernism Seminar of the Mahindra Humanities Center at
Harvard on Wednesday, 16 November, at 6:00 p.m. for a lecture offered by
Jeanne Follansbee entitled:
“Anti-Fascism and the Politics of Aesthetic Experience in Richard
Wright and Tillie Olson”
The talk will take place in Room 133 of the Barker Center.
Jeanne Follansbee, Senior Lecturer on History and Literature and
Director of Studies for the Committee on Degrees in History and
Literature at Harvard, will present an excerpt from her book manuscript,
Democratic Aesthetics: Anti-Fascism in Thirties America. Another
excerpt, on Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom!, appeared in the January issue
of Modernism/modernity. Additionally, she has published commentaries on
the work of Paul Gilroy, the politics of aesthetic experience, Let Us
Now Praise Famous Men, and paranoia in post-9/11 fiction. She is
co-editor, with Ann Keniston, of Literature after 9/11 (Routledge 2008).
Her scholarship explores the historical agency of aesthetic forms,
particularly in times of crisis, by thinking about cultural productions
as responses to and interventions in historical events or problems.
There is free parking near the HHC at the Broadway Garage, on Felton
between Broadway and Cambridge Street. Just tell the attendant that
you're participating in an event at the HHC. Normally the attendant is
welcoming, as long as it's after 5:00 p.m., even if we are erroneously
not on the good list.
We hope you'll be able to attend the session, which, as always,
includes discussion after the presentation.
Details about the Center, including a calendar of events, are available
