[SASA 2010 Conference] Atlanta, Georgia, February 17-February 19, 2011. (Due
September 1, 2010)
CFP - Panel title: =93Faulkner Studies and *The Diary of Francis Terry* *Le=
A Reconsideration.=94

We seek submissions (300 word-abstracts) for papers that consider new
directions in Faulkner studies. This panel will investigate and extend
issues first raised by Dr. Sally Wolff-King's new book, *Ledgers of History:
William Faulkner, an Almost Forgotten Friendship, and an Antebellum
Plantation Diary*, forthcoming in mid-September from LSU Press. In the
meantime, scholars are invited to peruse her article in *The Southern
Literary Journal* entitled =93William Faulkner and the Ledgers of History=
(Sally Wolff, Vol. 42, Number 1, Fall 2009, pp. 1-16), which presents her
basic findings: that William Faulkner perused over many years and
transmuted into fiction some of the material he found in the =93Diary of
Francis Terry Leak,=94 which at the time was in the possession of his
childhood friend, Edgar Wiggin Francisco,Jr

Papers for this panel may address topics in Faulkner studies that are
pertinent to Wolff-King=92s new research on the Leak diaries, including
information that Faulkner used that appears in the =93Diary,=94 such as nam=
architecture, legal terminology, clothing records, financial records,
borrowed phrases and events; the similarity of Faulkner=92s stories to the
Francisco family stories; more generally, the use of history and
understanding of the past; and Faulkner=92s affiliative connections with ot=
authors of historical fiction.

We are especially interested in submissions that consider these works
of fiction: *The Sound and the Fury*, *Absalom, Absalom!, Go Down, Moses, As
I Lay Dying*, *Sanctuary*, *The Unvanquished, Requiem for a Nun, Light in
August, The Hamlet, Intruder in the Dust, The Town, The Mansion*, *The
Reivers*, *Sartoris, *=93Barn Burning,=94 =93Shingles for the Lord,=94 =93D=
September,=94 and =93There Was a Queen.=94 Submissions should have a clear=
and should exhibit a knowledge of and willingness to rethink older paradigms
in Faulkner studies in light of the Leak diaries. New research on the
relationship between Faulkner=92s fictional oeuvre and the Francis Terry Le=
diaries, now housed at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, is
welcome and encouraged.

Submissions should include name, institutional affiliation, paper
title, abstract, and a short CV, in one file. Send file to
cwesley1 at binghamton.edu, by September 1, 2010
